About this directory

US Natural Hot Springs lists 277 natural hot springs across 23 states. My name is Alex Duplechain, and I am the person who built and runs US Natural Hot Springs.

Most hot spring directories tell you a temperature and a road condition without saying where either came from. This one shows the source for every fact on every listing, and says “unverified” where there is no source at all — which is more often than I would like. That is the whole point of it.

How a listing gets here

Something outside this website has to confirm that hot water comes out of the ground at that spot before it earns a page: every listing is checked against NOAA’s thermal springs survey and against OpenStreetMap. Road access is measured on the OpenStreetMap driving network rather than assumed, and 34 springs have no road within a quarter mile. Each fact on a listing carries a label saying where it came from, and listings where nothing has a source are kept out of search. Photos are licensed, credited and hosted here — none come from Google.

The sources, the measurements, what the method cannot tell you and how corrections work are all on the methodology page. How the site makes money is on the affiliate disclosure page.

If you run one of these places

Your listing is free and always will be — there is nothing to buy and no upgrade. If something on it is wrong, tell me and I will fix it the same day. That includes taking the page down: if a listing here is not actually a hot spring, or the spring is not on your property, say so and it goes. One operator has already done exactly that, and their page was removed the day they wrote.

Photographs are welcome and will be credited to you. So is your own water temperature, which beats a survey reading from 1980 and will be shown as coming from you.

If you spotted something wrong

Corrections from people who have actually been there are the most useful email I get. A closed road, a spring that has dried up, a policy that changed — send it and I will check it. Include the listing link if you can.

If you are writing about hot springs

The road access report is published under CC BY — reuse the figures with a link. Happy to pull numbers for a particular state or check a specific spring if that is more useful than the national picture.

More on what to send and when to expect a reply is on the contact page.
