Hot springs near Yellowstone: places you can actually soak (you can't inside the park)
By Alex Duplechain · Facts last reviewed October 13, 2026
Soaking in Yellowstone's hot springs is prohibited. The National Park Service says it is illegal to swim or bathe in any water that is entirely of thermal origin, and more than 20 people have died from burns after entering or falling into the park's hot springs. A U.S. Geological Survey report defines a hot spring as warmer than body temperature, 37°C (98.6°F), and a warm spring as cooler than that (WRI 91-4052). NOAA figures here are vent or source temperatures (thermal springs list). The bath may be cooler.
Straight-line miles below are measured between listing coordinates and rounded to the nearest mile. They are not driving distances.

Can you swim in Yellowstone's hot springs?
No. The swimming page prohibits soaking in hot springs, because the water often reaches the boiling point and to protect the thermal features. 36 CFR 7.13 bans swimming or bathing in a natural thermal pool or a stream fed entirely by a thermal spring, and keeps foot travel on boardwalks and marked trails.
Boiling River is not a backup soak. The swimming page and the Boiling River place page both say swimming is not possible there because of the 2022 floods. Check them. That status can change. The Firehole Swim Area on the same page is a river swim, marked closed, not a hot spring.
A private vehicle is $35 for seven days (fees). There is no separate fee to view the springs. The South Entrance road also crosses Grand Teton National Park, which charges its own entrance fee.

Is Thermopolis the East Entrance soak?
It is the public bath east of the park, not a soak at the gate. Hot Springs State Park is about 153 miles in a straight line from Mammoth Hot Springs.
[Hot Springs State Park](/wyoming/thermopolis/hot-springs-state-park) is at 51 U.S. Highway 20. The park is day-use, with no overnight camping, and the road is paved. The about page posts two clocks: a seasonal block (summer, Monday–Saturday 8 a.m.–7 p.m. and Sunday noon–7 p.m.; winter, Monday–Saturday 8 a.m.–5:30 p.m. and Sunday noon–5:30 p.m.) and a separate line of 8 a.m.–1 p.m. every day. The bathhouse is closed Thanksgiving and Christmas. Read the page the week you go.
Hot Springs Hotel and Spa, at 115 East Park Street, is a separate paid bathhouse. Its NOAA vent is the same 133°F Thermopolis source.

Which Yellowstone road stays open to cars in winter?
The park roads page says the only road generally open year-round to regular vehicles runs from the North Entrance at Gardiner, through the park, to Cooke City, via Tower Junction. Most other park roads close to regular vehicles from early November to late April, with limited commercially guided snowmobile and snowcoach travel from mid-December to mid-March. Check the road-status map. A car can still reach the North Entrance soaks. The other gates are not a drive through the park until those seasonal roads open.
Which park springs are only for sightseeing?
Wyoming's 3 sightseeing listings are Mammoth Hot Spring, Grand Prismatic Spring, and Azure Spring. See them from the boardwalks and marked trails. Pets stay off thermal areas and boardwalks. None of the three is a soak. The Montana hot springs road trip covers the resorts a day beyond these gates.
