Hot Springs in the Eastern US: Where to Soak East of the Plains
By Alex Duplechain · Facts last reviewed October 9, 2026
East of the Plains, the soaks that are hot at the source are in Hot Springs, Arkansas, and Hot Springs, North Carolina. Berkeley Springs, Capon Springs, Warm Mineral Springs, and the Warm Springs, Virginia reading are warm. Saratoga's baths start with cold mineral water and heat it. A U.S. Geological Survey report defines a hot spring as a thermal spring warmer than body temperature, 37°C (98.6°F), and a warm spring as a thermal spring cooler than that (WRI 91-4052). NOAA figures in this guide are vent or source temperatures. The bath you sit in may be cooler, or heated.
NOAA's thermal springs list has 1,661 springs and none in Michigan, Maine, Mississippi, or Louisiana. The eastern vents on it are 11 springs in Virginia, 7 springs in Georgia, 6 springs in Arkansas, 5 springs in West Virginia, and 2 springs in Florida, plus 1 spring each in North Carolina, New York, and Massachusetts. New York's entry is Lebanon Spring, a 72°F vent, not Saratoga. The directory has 13 listings east of 95°W. Two of them are closed: Hot Wells in Louisiana, and a separate Hot Springs entry in Arkansas that is not the national park and not a bathhouse. Hot Springs National Park is a walk along Bathhouse Row, not a soak. What remains is 10 open soaks east of 95°W.

Arkansas
Hot Springs, Arkansas is the town where the hot water is. The rest of the state's listings are on the Arkansas page, including Eureka Springs.
Hot Springs National Park
Hot Springs National Park charges no entrance fee. The National Park Service says the springs re-emerge at an average source temperature of 143°F, which is hot. There is no outdoor soaking. The water is piped into two bathhouses on Bathhouse Row: the Buckstaff, at 509 Central Avenue, for guests 10 and older, and the Quapaw, at 413 Central Avenue, for guests 14 and older (soak page). Both charge and set their own hours. If you want a night in town, Gulpha Gorge Campground at 305 Gulpha Gorge Road has 40 full-hookup sites at $34 a night, by reservation on Recreation.gov (campground).
Quapaw Baths & Spa
[Quapaw Baths & Spa](/arkansas/hot-springs/quapaw-baths-spa) is hot. NOAA vent: 147°F. Public thermal pools are first come, first served: admission stops at 5 p.m., the pools close at 6, guests must be 14 or older (ages 14 to 18 with an adult), swimsuits and non-slip swim shoes are required, and anyone pregnant, menstruating, incontinent, or with a pacemaker or defibrillator stays out of the public pools. Rates are on the baths page.
The Hotel Hot Springs
[The Hotel Hot Springs](/arkansas/hot-springs/the-hotel-hot-springs) is a hotel at 305 Malvern Avenue, not a bath. Bathhouse services mean a visit to a registered bathhouse, and a shuttle runs from 7 a.m. to 11 p.m. every day (amenities, park page). Breakfast is a buffet with a surcharge. Parking is a garage about a block away. The 143°F reading is the park's source temperature.
The Palace Hotel and Bath House
[The Palace Hotel and Bath House](/arkansas/eureka-springs/the-palace-hotel-and-bath-house), at 135 Spring Street in Eureka Springs, is a private mineral bath, in business since 1901. Each room is for one guest, suits are optional, towels are provided, and attendants come in only when asked. Baths are for guests 16 and older. Massage is for 18 and older. Cancel at least 7 days ahead. A later cancellation or a no-show is non-refundable and adds a 20 percent gratuity. The spa page doesn't publish a water temperature or a rate.
North Carolina
[Hot Springs Resort And Spa](/north-carolina/hot-springs/hot-springs-resort-and-spa) is hot. NOAA vent: 108°F. The resort, at 315 Bridge Street, pipes the water into private outdoor tubs and says the baths are naturally hot mineral water, with no heater added to the spring itself (cold-weather note). You do not have to stay overnight to book a bath. A campground across the road has cabins, tent sites, and RV hookups (resort). Day-soak rates are on the mineral baths page. The resort's own pages disagree on the daily hours, so check them before you drive. The state page is North Carolina.
Virginia
[Warm Springs Pools](/virginia/warm-springs/warm-springs-pools) are warm. NOAA vent: 95°F, below body temperature. The operator, citing the U.S. Geological Survey, says the water stays at 98–99°F, just above body temperature at the top of that range. The pools are at 11 Bath Street, about five miles from The Omni Homestead. Reservations are required. The bathhouses are open 9 a.m. to 6 p.m., and 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. on the last Monday of the month. Florida
[Warm Mineral Springs Park](/florida/north-port/warm-mineral-springs-park) is warm. The City of North Port calls it the only natural warm spring in Florida and says the water averages 85°F year-round. NOAA vent: 86°F. The park is at 12200 San Servando Avenue, open 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. daily except Thanksgiving and Christmas. From October 1, 2026 through September 30, 2027, a North Port adult is $15 and a student age 6 to 17 is $11.25, a Sarasota County adult is $18 and a student is $13, and a non-resident adult is $20 and a student is $15. Children age 5 and under are free. Resident rates need proof of residency. Swim attire is required. Lifeguards clear the spring when lightning is within eight miles. The state page is Florida.
New York
Saratoga Spa State Park
[Saratoga Spa State Park](/new-york/saratoga-springs/saratoga-spa-state-park) doesn't publish a spring temperature. New York State Parks describes naturally spouting mineral springs, and a weekend tour at the Creekside Classroom hands out cups for tasting (tour). Soaking at this park means the mineral baths at Roosevelt, next door. The Peerless and Victoria pools are swimming pools, open in summer, not hot springs. A vehicle entrance fee is $10 per car on summer days and on spring and fall weekends, and there is no vehicle fee from October 13 to May 1. NOAA's list does not include Saratoga.
Roosevelt Baths & Spa
[Roosevelt Baths & Spa](/new-york/saratoga-springs/roosevelt-baths-spa) heats cold mineral water. The spa says the water is captured cold from underground springs and mixed with warm fresh water to a neutral temperature (spa). The spa doesn't publish a water temperature. A 40-minute mineral bath is $70. A 20-minute bath before another treatment is $55. A 20-minute sauna before another treatment is $15 (services menu). Hours are Thursday through Monday, 8:15 a.m. to 5 p.m. Guests must be 18 or older. Reservations are required, and the desk is cashless. The spa is at 39 Roosevelt Drive, inside the state park. The state page is New York.
West Virginia
Berkeley Springs State Park
[Berkeley Springs State Park](/west-virginia/berkeley-springs/berkeley-springs-state-park) is warm, with heated baths. West Virginia State Parks says the water flows at a constant 74.3°F and calls it warm. NOAA vent: 72°F. The Roman bath holds 750 gallons of that spring water, heated to 102°F (bathhouse). The park is at 2 South Washington Street, open 6 a.m. to 10 p.m. The state park says the springs flow about 2,000 gallons a minute, all of them within about a hundred yards. The state page is West Virginia.
Hygeia Bath House & Spa
[Hygeia Bath House & Spa](/west-virginia/high-view/hygeia-bath-house-spa) is warm, with heated baths. Capon Springs says the water reaches the surface at 65°F and is geologically classified as a warm spring (Capon water). NOAA's list has no Capon Springs vent. The soaking baths are 500 gallons of that water heated to 102°F, in a private room for 30 minutes (services). The resort site says the 2026 season opens April 30 and runs through the beginning of November. Hygeia is in High View.
Michigan, Maine, Mississippi, and Louisiana
NOAA's thermal springs list has none in Michigan, Maine, Mississippi, or Louisiana. The one Louisiana listing, Hot Wells, is closed. See Louisiana. From the Northeast, Berkeley Springs and Saratoga are the open options above. From the Gulf South, Hot Springs, Arkansas is.
Before you go
Quapaw, the North Carolina resort, the Warm Springs Pools, and Hygeia post their rates on their own sites. Swimwear is required at Quapaw and at Warm Mineral Springs. It is optional at the Palace because the room is private, and optional at Warm Springs Pools only from 4 p.m. to 5 p.m. The etiquette guide covers how to share a tub. Recheck the North Carolina hours, and any rate page, the week you go.
